November 11, 2008 - DAR Constitution Hall - Washington DC, Washingon DC
Concert review by Cheryl K (cherylk1 at gmail dot com)

I decided to wait a little bit before submitting a review to let the whole experience kinda sink in before making any judgement calls. I've been a fan for over a decade but this was my first Pumpkins show and overall I'd say that I enjoyed the show.

So here's a few of my comments, recollections, and opinions.

- The band seemed very energetic and they seemed like they were having a good time. I'm not sure if it was the venue or what but the audience seemed a bit more subdued than I expected. At one point, during one of the acoustic songs most of the audience sat down. Billy teased the crowd a little bit, encouraging everyone to sit back and just relax.

- The additional musicians added a new element to the songs. At times, the trumpet and trombone sounded out of place but they added depth to Eye and TBITB.

- I adored the performance of The Rose March. Absolutely adored it. True, it's one of my favorite songs that Billy has written since the band reformed but seeing it live made me love it even more.

- Since it was my first Pumpkins show I didn't really care what they played, they could have come out and just burped into the microphones and I still would have enthusiastically cheered. The Pink Floyd cover dragged a little bit in my opinion, but then again, I don't know the song too well and as a result, the entire time I kept thinking to myself, "so, where is this going!?". I've read a few complains about how they haven't been mixing the setlists up and while I can't really comment on it that may be a bit disappointing for people who saw a show a few months back and were expecting something new. Don't get me wrong, I liked the idea of the two night shows and I'm not going to say they should have chosen different songs but they could have mixed the order up a bit.

- I talked to a couple people after the show who were really disappointed with the setlist, they wanted to see songs from the early albums but I was pretty satisfied with hearing Siva, Mayonaise, and Today. Transformer and Once Upon a Time were nice additions, as were Eye and TBITB. Overall, I was pleased with the songs chosen.

- I really enjoyed Billy's interaction with the crowd, especially when responding to a fan who yelled "you used to rock!" and when they brought a girl on stage pretending as if she was James.

I'm looking forward to whatever the band has in store for us fans and I'm hoping my first Pumpkins show won't be my last.

My final thought- I hope Billy stops trying to please everybody. It's impossible to do and he should just focus on writing more amazing music and being happy and enjoying life.

P.S. Billy's headdress! Wow! :D
